Chinese Travel Vocabulary – Asking for directions

Asking where is sth is easy, but the problem is: do you understand the answer??? This article summarises different locative words/expressions in Chinese to help you solve this problem!

Locative Vocabulary
右边/~面 Yòu biān/ ~miàn Right
左边/~面 Zuǒ biān/ ~miàn Left

东边/~面 Dōng biān/ ~miàn East
南边/~面 Nán biān/ ~miàn South
西边/~面 Xī biān / ~miàn West
北边/~面 Běi biān/ ~miàn North

东南边/~面 Dōngnán biān/ ~miàn South-east
东北边/~面 Dōngběi biān/ ~miàn North-east
西南边/~面 Xīnán biān/ ~miàn South-west
西北边/~面 Xīběi biān/ ~miàn North-west

前边/~面 Qián biān / ~miàn Front
后边/~面 Hòu biān / ~miàn Behind

旁边/边上 Páng biān/biān shàng Next to, beside
中间/当中 Zhōng jiān/dāng zhōng Middle, centre

外边/~面 Wài biān/ ~miàn outside
里边/~面 Lǐ biān/ ~miàn inside
上边/~面 Shàng biān/ ~miàn above; up
下边/~面 Xià biān/ ~miàn below; underneath

*to express the specific position, just to put ‘在’(zài) before the locatives, for example: 在右边 (it’s on the right); 在旁边(next to it)

 

Different ways to express ‘go straight
直走 Zhízǒu
向前走/往~走 Wǎng qián zǒu / xiàng ~ zǒu
一直向前走/一直往~走 yīzhí xiàng qián zǒu / yīzhí wǎng ~ zǒu

Different ways to express ‘Turn right/left’
向右拐/向~转/往~走 Xiàng yòuguǎi / xiàng~zhuǎn / wǎng ~zǒu
向左拐/向~转/往~走 Xiàng zuǒguǎi / xiàng~zhuǎn / wǎng ~zǒu

Other usages
(sth.) 在……左边/右边 zài…zuǒbiān/yòubiān
on one’s left/right
on the left/right of sth.
Ex: 在银行的左边  Zài yínháng de zuǒbiān.
It’s on the left of the bank.
超市在公园的右边。Chāoshì zài gōngyuán de yòubiān.
The supermarket is on the right of the park.

(sth.) 在……上面/下面 zài…shàngmiàn/xiàmiàn
on; over; above / below; under; underneath
Ex: 在桥上 Zài qiáo shàng.
On the bridge.
船在桥下 Chuán zài qiáo xià.
A ship is under the bridge.

(sth.) 在……里面/外面 zài…lǐmiàn/wàimiàn
in; inside / out; outside
Ex:他坐在教室里(面)。 Tā zuò zài jiàoshì lǐ(miàn).
He sat in the classroom
他在餐厅外(面)。 Tā zài cāntīng wài(miān).
He is outside the restaurant

(sth.) 在……对面 zài…duìmiàn
be opposite sth.; be across from
Ex: 在马路的对面。Zài mǎlù de duìmiàn.
It’s on the opposite side of the street.
我在你对面。 Wǒ zài nǐ duìmiàn.
I’m opposite (to) you.

(sth.) 在……旁边 zài…pángbiān
next to; beside; nearby
Ex: 他坐在我旁边。Tā zuò zài wǒ pángbiān.
He sat next to me.

(sth.) 在……附近 zài…fùjìn
near; nearby
Ex: 我家在学校附近。Wǒ jiā zài xuéxiào fùjìn.
My home is near the school.

*附近 expresses a longer distance than 旁边

(sth.) 在……前面 zài…qiánmiàn
in the front of; in front of
Ex: 汽车在餐厅前面。 Qìchē zài cāntīng qiánmiàn.
The car is in the front of the restaurant.

(sth.) 在……后面 zài…hòumiàn
at the back of; after; in back of
Ex: 超市在邮局的后面。Chāoshì zài yóujú de hòumiàn.
The supermarket is at the back of the post office.

(sth.) 在……中间/中央 zài…zhōngjiān/zhōngyāng
In the middle of; between; among / in the center of;
Ex: 超市在邮局和银行的中间。 Chāoshì zài yóujú hé yíngháng de zhōngjiān.
The supermarket is between the post office and the bank.
在停车场中央。Zài tíngchē chǎng zhōngyāng.
In the center of the parking.
