Use WeChat to enlarge your Chinese learning possibilities

Do you know WeChat?

WeChat is a cross-platform communicational tool, it can support one person or multiple people participating talking at the same time. Also, it allows sending voice messages, photo, videos, and words via phones and website. Now, WeChat is China’s most popular Chat App, it has over 900 million monthly active users.

If you don’t have a WeChat account yet, please click here to download:

In my last article, I talked about several good applications and websites for learning Chinese. Wechat is one of the most famous. No matter you’ve already had one, or not yet, I’m pretty sure that you are still not clear about its certain functions, as it has such a wide variety of options! Thus, in today’s article, I’m going to show you how to use it to maximize its usage and increase your learning possibilities.

1. How do we add official accounts on Wechat?

You can either add official accounts through the ‘Chats’ page or the ‘Contact’ page.
① Via the ‘Chats’ page: click the right top ‘+’ icon – Add Contacts – Official Accounts, then put any keywords you like into the search engine to find out your favourite ones.
② Via the ‘Contact’ page: click the right top ‘little man plus’ icon – Official Accounts.

*Tips: you can click ‘view history’ to see all the previous posts.

2. How do we find friends on Wechat?

Maybe you have trouble in finding a language partner now. However, do you know, once you register on Wechat, it will be getting easier to solve this problem. On Wechat, you can find friends via the following 3 ways:

One: Shake

This is actually a WeChat random dating application. You can find this item on ‘Discover’ page (if you can’t find it, please go to ‘Me’ – ‘Setting’ – ‘General’ – ‘Features’ to active it ).

How to use it? Very easy, just shake your phone for several seconds, then it shows up the people who are doing the same thing as you. Of course, you can decide later if you really want to add them to your contact list.

Two: People Nearby

This item is on the same page as the ‘Shake’ function. In order to use it, you need to allow Wechat detected your location (if not, you need to activate it first). The great things about it are: you can see anyone no matter he/she is very close to you or thousands of meters away, as long as they activate this service as well. Sometimes, people will also add you via this after you leave your footprints by accident.

The way that I recommend using: if you are not in China, but wants to add some contacts on your WeChat, especially Chinese people, you can go to Chinatown or the streets where the Chinese people frequent the most, then open this functions!

Last one: Friend Radar

Friend Radar is just like its name – a sort of game – it allows you to add people with your vicinity. You can find this item on ‘Contact’ page, and click the right top ‘little man plus’, then you will find it immediately. Lots of people (even Chinese) don’t know this function as it looks like so hidden. One thing needs to be aware is: you can only radar someone if this person is also playing this game at the same time, and he/she is quite near you (within 3 meters). The people will be automatically added to your contact list if you are agreed.

The way that I recommend using: you are meeting a lot of cool new people, but don’t have time to add all of them, then use this function!

Several amazing features that you might not know about Wechat

● Wechat can translate messages from Chinese to English, just pressing longer on the message and choose ‘translate’ (only Chinese-English or vice versa).
● Wechat can revoke the information sent within 2 minutes (only words and pictures)
● Wechat can convert voice message to text message (you need to change your language setting to ‘Chinese simplified’ to do this).
● Wechat has some special effects if you try to type certain words. For example, if you type ‘么么哒‘(memeda), ‘xoxo’, ‘cium‘, ‘baci‘, ‘besos‘, you will receive a bunch of ‘😘’ facial expressions falling from the top screen…! Same as ‘🎂’ to ‘生日快乐‘ (shēngrì kuàilè) and ‘✨’ to ‘想你了‘ (xiǎng nǐ le).

❤️A little reminder: try to send the following messages during the upcoming festivals, maybe you will receive some extra surprises!

Halloween: 万圣节快乐 (wànshèng jié kuàilè)
Chrismas: 圣诞快乐 (shèngdàn kuàilè)
New Year: 新年快乐 (xīnnián kuàilè)

3. What do I like about Wechat the most?

Of course, it’s Wechat Pay, information sharing, and inconsumable stickers!

Conclusion: Actually, Wechat’ functions are not just limited to the above ones, we can also use it to shop, play games, top up phones, repay cards etc. It plays a more and more important role in Chinese people’s lives. If you discover an awesome feature that I didn’t include above, please do tell me!
